Youth Discovered Deceased After Untrue Allegations of Taking Cremated Remains
A teenage youth was found dead only a few days after being wrongly blamed of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a break-in, a coroner's inquiry has learned.
Heartbreaking Finding
The young boy's mother and father found his body in his bedroom at his Flintshire residence on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The inquest heard how his parent received a message on 8 November 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if Kai was her child. The message added: "Tell him thanks for burgling my flat."
In a testimony presented to the proceedings, the mother said the woman had been in the news, asserting her baby's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Law Enforcement Inquiry
An investigation report from authorities later determined the supposed break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was never taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed taken remains generated online responses, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his mother said individuals "understood it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Health Impact
She explained that Kai had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that disorder, other individuals' views really were important to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was untrue".
The teenager was arrested at home, but nothing was discovered. He was transported to a police station and later freed pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to reached out to the family by the time of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His mother said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his ADHD meant sometimes "certain periods could feel like much longer".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son informed her he had gone into the residence because the resident who resided there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Digital Bullying
In a joint statement between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her child was being harassed digitally after the allegations.
The inquest heard that a young adult urged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he died, explaining how she had listened to him "chuckling and joking".
She described him as a "caring, loving" young man, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his concerns", she said, noting that he could not stand to have anybody "think bad of him".
School Reaction
The hearing received testimony from school staff at the local High School.
On November 8th, she "overheard some students discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the first I learned".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the conversation, the educator said she rang Kai's family telephone and provided a message saying she had spoken to the student about the accusations.
The court heard his parents said they never receive that message.
Formal Conclusion
Lead investigator told the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with suspects with ADHD, before deciding whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a descriptive finding, he said: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against Kai Benjamin Lloyd, a young individual.
"Probably untruths were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of social media.
"On November 11th, he was questioned by the authorities and following his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The coroner determined: "There is no proof that the actions or failures of any organization led to or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a personal act it is impossible to discern his purpose."
